MIPS Helmets

MIPS Helmets

Ever wonder why all the hype about the MIPS helmet system? It is all for a good reason, brain health and protection. As science and research develop, we are understanding how delicate our brain is and how much effect falls, and concussions can have on our physical and mental health.

Most helmets are designed and tested with vertical drops. However, injury statistics show that most fall occurs on an angle. Science has shown that our brains are extremely sensitive to rotational forces. This has led to the development of the MIPS.

MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. It is designed to reduce the risk transferred during rotational impact. The MIPS Brain Protection System (BPS) is found inside the helmet, sitting between the lining and the EPS. The EPS is the high-quality foam used in all helmets that is used to take the impact during falls. The BPS is the yellow shell you see when you pull back the liner. Separating the skull slightly from the EPS creating a low-level friction barrier. This barrier re-directions the rotational force, reducing the risk of strain to the brain tissue. Due to the low-level friction barrier there is slight 10-15mm of movement in this helmet, so it is incredibly important that helmets with MIPS fit snug and correctly.

This system has been tested on over 20,000 studies from multiple third-party testing. Including Folksam, Sweden, 2015-2019. (Snow, bike and equestrian helmets), Länsförsäkringar, Sweden, 2018, Consumer Reports, US 2016 and Testfakta, 2016.

Many high-impact sports have already adopted the MIPS into their standard helmets, including Biking, Snowboarding, Snow Skiing, Moto-cross, Hockey and more. Back on Track release the first MIPS helmet to the Canadian market in 2018 with the EQ3 and now releasing the Lynx in 2019.
